Stacking, Reach and the Geometry of a Picking Face

Depth is the quiet constraint that nobody puts on a specification. An open-front bin is picked by reaching in from the front, so the deeper the bin, the longer the reach and the more likely it is that the operator quietly stops rotating stock and simply takes from whatever is nearest. Yes, Bull Bins are designed to stack, with the base of one locating on the bin below. The practical limit is set by your operation rather than by the bin alone. Stack only identical steps, keep the loads even, and apply one firm rule: nobody should be pulling the bottom bin of a column while loaded bins sit above it. On a busy picking face, present bins in a single layer on shelves and keep stacking for reserve stock and transport, because a column that is picked from constantly will creep forward and eventually go over.
What is the difference between Bull Bins and Supra, Hippo or Rhino Tuff bins?
All four are open-front families, but they cover different sizes and duties. Supra SB 1 is 125 x 100 x 60 mm outside, Hippo 612/T is 100 x 110 x 53 mm and Rhino ARTB-05 is 109 x 104 x 49 mm, against Bull Bin 5 at 168 x 102 x 74 mm. The service range for all ALKON bin ranges is −10°C to +70°C, and both ends of that window are real. In chilled and cold areas polypropylene becomes progressively less forgiving of impact, so a bin that would shrug off a knock on the shop floor can crack near the bottom of its range. At the warm end, remember that a closed warehouse under a metal roof, or a rack standing beside an oven or a drying area, is often much hotter than the ambient reading suggests. Bull Bins are storage bins, not process trays — no ovens, autoclaves or hot washing above the stated limit.
Bull Bins carry a food-safe mark. Can I use them for food or pharmaceutical materials?
All the bin ranges are moulded in polypropylene copolymer with resin identification code 05 and carry food-safe and recyclable marks. Where that mark is relevant to your application, the important discipline is segregation: keep those bins physically separated and colour-coded so they never drift into the general engineering pool, wash them to your own defined regime with water below the service limit, and never use solvents on them. When should I move from Bull Bins to Mammoth Bins?
Move up when any one of four things is true: a full bin cannot be lifted down safely by one person, the longest item no longer fits the inside length with clearance, you are stacking Bull Bins purely to gain volume rather than to organise, or the contents are wet and dirty enough to want the airflow and drainage of a mesh bin. A Mammoth is 820 x 315 x 300 mm outside and 740 x 250 x 290 mm inside, so it is a very different bin to handle.
