What an ACO component organiser actually is, and where it belongs
A component organiser is a fixed housing carrying a set of individually removable drawers, with one part number to a drawer. The housing stays where you bolt it or stand it; the drawer is the thing that travels to the bench, the sub-assembly table or the machine when a job calls for it. Where an organiser belongs is the point of use, not the far end of the stores. The parts that suit a drawer are the ones a person needs twenty times a shift and never indents formally: grub screws, circlips, ferrules, O-rings, cable ties, cutting inserts, LED indicators, small mounting brackets. If an operator has to walk forty metres to a rack for a two-rupee washer, the walk gets skipped and a substitute part goes into the assembly instead. An organiser within arm's reach of the bench removes that decision before it is ever made.

The drawer format earns its place precisely where an open bin struggles. Open-front bins are faster to pick from, but they collect airborne dust, grinding swarf and oil mist, and small flat parts migrate between neighbouring bins whenever someone knocks the shelf. A closed drawer keeps a hundred-piece strip of terminals clean for months in a fabrication bay, and the flat drawer front gives you a consistent labelling surface - which matters more than anything else once a bench is carrying fifty separate part numbers.
Reading the range: DS and DB drawer mixes
ACO configurations are built from two drawer families, referred to as DS and DB. The DS drawers are the smaller, shallower positions; the DB drawers are the deeper and larger ones. A given cabinet code carries a fixed number of drawer positions, and the DS/DB mix decides whether those positions hold a thousand washers each or twenty cable glands each. Get the mix wrong and you have a cabinet that is half empty and half overflowing within a month of commissioning, which is a hard thing to correct once the labels are printed.
The right sequence is to classify the parts first and pick the cabinet second. Take the actual part list for the bench or cell in question, and for every line record three things: the largest single dimension of the part, the quantity you want held at the point of use, and how often that position will be replenished. Sort the list by volume. The smallest volume band goes to DS positions, sometimes with a partition; anything that will not lie flat and loose in a shallow drawer goes to DB. Only then look at which configuration matches those counts.
Confirm the exact drawer dimensions before you commit anything to a purchase order. - Measure the longest dimension of the part, not the average - a 60 mm cable tie decides the drawer, not the M3 nut beside it.
- Set the holding quantity as consumption between two replenishment visits plus a margin, never as whatever happens to fit.
- Do not plan any drawer to be filled to the brim; a drawer you have to dig into is a drawer that gets left open.
- Heavy parts in the lower rows, light and fast-moving parts at chest height, slow movers at the top.
- Leave ten to fifteen per cent of positions empty at handover for the part numbers nobody remembered.
The ACO 18 as a reference cabinet: 457 x 424 x 164 mm
The ACO 18 cabinet measures 457 mm high, 424 mm wide and 164 mm deep, and it is worth treating those three figures as the anchor for any ACO layout you plan. Almost every practical question about whether a component organiser will fit your bench, your wall or your trolley resolves into arithmetic on that footprint. Once a maintenance or stores team has a single one of these standing on the shop floor, everybody develops an instinct for the size, and specifying further units afterwards becomes a much shorter conversation.
Start with the depth, because that is the number that decides bench versus wall. At 164 mm the cabinet occupies only a narrow strip along the back of a worktop. On a standard 600 mm deep bench it leaves roughly 436 mm of clear working area in front, which is enough for a small fixture or a scanner-and-screen station but not enough for a full sub-assembly jig. On jig-heavy benches the organiser therefore moves to the wall or a back panel. On a 750 mm deep bench you retain about 586 mm clear, which most operators find comfortable.
Then take width and height together. Two ACO 18 units side by side occupy 848 mm, three occupy 1272 mm and four occupy 1696 mm, which is why benches carrying organisers are commonly planned in 900 mm, 1300 mm and 1700 mm clear spans. Stacked, two units come to 914 mm of height, so a wall-mounted double stack starting 900 mm above finished floor level finishes a little above 1800 mm - the outer edge of comfortable reach. Positions above that line should be reserved for genuinely slow-moving items.
Set that depth against the other Alkon ranges and the division of labour becomes obvious. Bench-top, wall-mount and back-panel decisions
Free-standing on the bench is the simplest option and the one most shops begin with, but it is also the one that quietly costs the most usable work surface. It suits a maintenance workshop where the bench is used for repair rather than production, and it suits a small service centre where the cabinet may have to move as the layout settles. If you take this route, keep the unit against a wall or a back rail so it cannot be pushed off the edge, and remember that a cabinet full of steel fasteners needs two people to shift safely.
Wall mounting is the better answer wherever the bench is doing real work, and the fixing is the part that gets under-specified. A fully loaded organiser is a static load applied at a distance from the wall, and the anchors have to suit the substrate. Solid brick and RCC columns accept conventional expansion or chemical anchors; AAC block, drywall partitions and cladding sheets do not, and there you should be fixing to a steel back panel or a channel spanning between structural members. This shortcut fails months later, fully loaded, which is the worst possible time.
Back panels and louvre panels are the middle path, and they are why the accessories list matters as much as the cabinet list. Whichever mounting you choose, plan the pull-out arc on paper. A drawer roughly 150 mm deep needs about that much clear space in front to come out fully, plus room for a hand and for the operator to stand square to it. Two facing benches set 900 mm apart with organisers on both sides will collide in the aisle, and someone will find that out on the first day of production. Mark the swing on the layout drawing before installation and check it against the gangway width your safety team insists on.
Sliding, rotary and trolley combinations
Once a wall run is full, the question becomes how to add part numbers without adding wall. Sliding combinations put a second bank of organisers behind the first on rails, so the front bank slides sideways to expose the rear. You roughly double the part numbers per metre of wall at the cost of one extra movement per pick. That is a sensible trade for the slower-moving half of the list and a poor one for the fastest movers, which should always stay on the front face where they can be reached without thinking.
Rotary combinations mount organisers back to back on a rotating frame so that several faces are reachable from one standing position. The gain is floor area: the footprint of one cabinet with the capacity of two or more faces. This suits a tool crib or a spares counter where one storekeeper serves a queue, and it suits electronics rework benches where a technician should not be stepping off the ESD mat. It does need clear circular space around it, which is exactly what a congested Ahmedabad or Rajkot job shop rarely has, so measure before committing.
Trolley and crash cart combinations take the whole set of part numbers to the job instead. For breakdown maintenance, commissioning teams and field service crews covering several customer locations in a day around Delhi NCR or the Thane-Belapur belt, a trolley-mounted organiser is the difference between one trip and four. - If a part is consumed at one fixed station, fix the cabinet at that station.
- If a part is consumed wherever the fault happens to be, put it on a trolley.
- If two operators need the same list from opposite sides, price a rotary unit before buying two cabinets.
- If you are short of wall but not of time, use a sliding combination and keep A-class parts on the front bank.
- If a mobile unit must cross wet or uneven floors daily, check the castor specification rather than assuming it.
Conductive and ESD-safe organisers for electronics
Standard polypropylene is an insulator, and an insulator inside an electrostatic protected area is a liability. Every time a drawer slides, a part rubs a drawer wall or an operator wipes the front face, charge is generated and it has nowhere to go. For assembly of populated boards, semiconductors, MOSFETs, LED drivers, sensors and control cards that is not an acceptable risk, and it is the reason a conductive component organiser is specified rather than a standard one. What you should specify goes beyond a material call-out. Tell your supplier whether you need conductive drawers only or the complete assembly, whether the unit sits inside a formally defined EPA with a documented grounding scheme, and how the cabinet is to be bonded to the common point ground. Ask for the current test data sheet against the exact item code rather than accepting a general assurance, because your internal audit will ask to see a document. The failure mode in ESD areas is almost never the hardware; it is mixing. One standard drawer borrowed from the mechanical bench and slotted into a conductive cabinet undoes the entire scheme, and nobody notices because it still looks like a drawer. Segregate visually, mark the cabinet clearly, keep a small stock of spare conductive drawers so nobody is tempted to substitute, and add the drawer type to your periodic EPA audit checklist. Geographically this comes up constantly. The electronics and EMS clusters around Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad and the Pune belt run formal EPA controls because their own customers audit them, and the same expectation now reaches smaller panel, driver and controller manufacturers in Nashik, Coimbatore and Navi Mumbai. If you are laying out a new ESD line, plan the conductive storage at the same time as the mats, wrist straps and grounding hardware. Retrofitting it after the first audit finding costs more and looks worse on the corrective action report.
Drawer organiser, shelf bin or pick bin - choosing correctly
The commonest specification error is choosing the format out of habit. A drawer organiser is right when part numbers are many, quantities per part are modest, the parts are small and cleanliness matters. An open bin is right when picks are frequent, hands are gloved and speed beats dust protection. A tote is right when the parts have to travel between stations. Most shop floors need all three, and the cost of getting it wrong is never the bin itself - it is the daily seconds and the annual stock variance that follow.
Size is what gives you the ladder, and it is worth having the numbers in one place when you plan, because the smallest Alkon bins overlap directly with ACO drawer territory. Read the ladder against your own part list and the answer usually declares itself: if a part number needs more stock at the point of use than a Bull Bin 5 will hold at 145 x 86 x 66 mm inside, a drawer is the wrong home for it and it belongs in an open bin on a shelf. If it needs less than a Hippo 612/T, a partitioned drawer is more efficient than a bin.

Worked example: forty-six part numbers on a panel assembly bench
Take a realistic shape of problem. A control panel builder near Chakan, Pune, assembles distribution and PLC panels to order. The bench-side list runs to forty-six active part numbers: terminal blocks and end stops, DIN rail clips, ferrules in five sizes, crimp lugs in six, screws and washers in nine, LED indicators, push button contact blocks, cable glands in four sizes, spiral wrap, markers and earth tags. Today they live in polythene bags in a cupboard and in three open trays that started life as supplier packaging.
Classify before you buy anything. Of the forty-six lines, thirty-one fall into the small band - ferrules, screws, washers, markers, clips, end stops - and are candidates for DS positions, several of them partitioned. Fifteen lines are bulkier: glands, contact blocks, indicators and the larger lugs, all of which need DB positions. Holding quantity is set at one week of build, which for the fastest-moving ferrule size works out near two thousand pieces and for the slowest gland size is thirty. Nothing on the list exceeds what a deep drawer will take.
Now the hardware follows arithmetically. Three ACO 18 cabinets give fifty-four drawer positions against forty-six part numbers, leaving eight spare - close to the ten to fifteen per cent slack you should always plan. Three cabinets side by side occupy 1272 mm of width, which fits comfortably inside a 1500 mm bench span with room at each end, and at 164 mm deep they leave 436 mm of clear bench on a 600 mm top. Weight the mix so that the two fastener-heavy cabinets sit at the ends and the DB-heavy cabinet sits where the wiring operator stands.
What changes operationally can be seen without any measurement system. The bench stops keeping duplicate open bags as a hedge, because the drawer is trusted. Kitting for a panel becomes one pass along the cabinet face instead of a search. Weekly replenishment becomes a visual walk in which the storekeeper opens drawers, reads levels and writes top-up quantities on a single sheet. And when the same customer reorders eight months later, the ferrule sizes are still in the same drawers, which is the entire point of the exercise.
How ACO installations go wrong
Overloading comes first. A drawer filled to the top with M10 bolts is a mass that has to be pulled out on its runners several hundred times a month, and it will feel wrong from the first week - the drawer sticks, the operator yanks it, and eventually somebody props it permanently open and the dust protection is gone. Heavy fasteners belong in an open bin on a shelf, where the load sits on the shelf rather than on a drawer front. Keep drawers for parts where a full drawer is a comfortable one-hand lift.
Label drift comes second. Cabinets are commissioned with neat printed labels and then reality arrives: a part is superseded, a drawer is swapped between two cabinets during a rearrangement, someone writes the new number on masking tape. Six months later two drawers claim the same part number and one of them is wrong. The correction is procedural rather than physical - one named person owns the label file, labels are printed and never handwritten, and no drawer moves between cabinets without its label being reprinted at the same time.
Fixing failures come third, and they cause injury rather than inconvenience. A wall-mounted unit fitted with the wrong anchors into hollow block or a partition will hold an empty cabinet indefinitely and then let go once it is full and in daily use. Specify the anchor to the substrate rather than to the cabinet, and have the installation checked by whoever signs off structural fixings on your site. This is not an area where the storekeeper's judgement and a borrowed hammer drill are sufficient.
Fourth, and most expensive, is putting the cabinet in the wrong place altogether. A component organiser bought for the main stores, filled with bench consumables and kept behind an issue counter delivers almost none of the benefit - the walk is still there, the indent is still there, and the operator still hoards a private stock in a drawer of the bench. If the parts are consumed at the bench, the organiser goes at the bench and the stores holds the bulk pack. Point-of-use storage that is not at the point of use is just a cupboard.
Labelling, part numbering and stock accuracy
The drawer front is the most valuable surface on the whole cabinet, and it should carry exactly four things: the part number as it exists in your ERP, a short human description, the standard holding quantity, and the location code. Any more and nobody reads it; any less and somebody has to ask. Print the labels. Handwriting on a drawer front is the beginning of every labelling problem we have ever been shown, because handwriting invites amendment and amendment invites disagreement about which drawer is correct.
The location code is what connects the cabinet to your system. A simple scheme covering area, cabinet, row and position - something in the shape of PNL-C2-R3-04 - is enough, and it should be generated once and never reused even when the part in that drawer changes. When a picker or storekeeper is told where a part is, they should be told the drawer and not merely the cabinet. Of all the changes you can make, this is the one that makes an organiser measurably faster to work from than an open shelf.
Partitions turn one drawer into a two-position replenishment system. Put the working quantity in the front half and the reserve behind it; when the front empties, the operator draws the reserve forward and drops a card into the replenishment box. It is a two-bin system inside a single drawer, it costs almost nothing, and it removes the judgement call about when to reorder. Partitions are a standard Alkon accessory and they also stop small flat parts from mixing when a drawer is pulled sharply or slammed shut.
For counting, treat the drawer as the unit. Small fasteners are counted more accurately by weight than by hand, so record a piece weight against each fastener line once and let the cycle counter weigh the contents. Count the cabinets on a rolling schedule rather than once a year - one cabinet at a time, one shift a week, is far less disruptive than a full shutdown count and it catches label drift while it is still confined to a single drawer instead of spreading across a bench.
Environment limits, cleaning and service life
The Alkon bin ranges are moulded in polypropylene copolymer, carry resin identification code 05, are marked food-safe and recyclable, and are given a service range of -10 degrees C to +70 degrees C. That covers essentially every indoor Indian factory condition and most covered yards, but it does have edges worth knowing before you site a cabinet. Storage directly against a hot process - annealing lines, moulding machine platens, the discharge end of an oven conveyor - can exceed 70 degrees C locally even when the ambient is comfortable, and a unit left there will distort in time.
Cold is the other edge, and it matters less often but matters absolutely when it applies. Walk-in cold rooms in food and pharmaceutical plants generally sit above -10 degrees C, but blast freezing areas do not, and polypropylene becomes progressively more brittle as it approaches and passes the lower limit. If you intend to store spares, consumables or packaging components inside a freezer environment in a dairy at Nashik or a seafood unit near Kolkata, say so at the enquiry stage so the correct product is quoted rather than the standard one.
Cleaning is straightforward and should be scheduled rather than left to when someone notices. Warm water with a mild detergent, a soft cloth, and drawers removed and washed rather than wiped in place is the whole method. Avoid aggressive solvents and abrasive pads, which craze and dull the surface, and a crazed drawer front takes labels badly afterwards. In plants where oil mist hangs in the air, it is the outside of the cabinet that needs the attention, because a greasy front face is what makes operators leave drawers ajar.
Procurement, wholesale supply and commissioning
The enquiry that returns an accurate quotation first time contains more than a model number. Send us the part list you intend to store with approximate sizes and holding quantities, the bench or wall dimensions you have to work within, whether the location is ESD-controlled, and how many identical stations you are equipping. Fix the standard centrally, order against it, and site-level variation becomes a documented exception rather than the default outcome.

Can I buy replacement drawers separately, or only complete cabinets?
Drawers are consumable in a way that a cabinet housing is not, so it is sensible to plan for replacements from the start - particularly in ESD areas, where holding a small stock of spare conductive drawers stops anyone substituting a standard one. It is also worth ordering a few extra drawers with the original cabinets, because a damaged drawer replaced immediately keeps a labelled position live rather than pushing its parts into a neighbouring drawer.
How many cabinets do I need for a given number of part numbers?
Count the part numbers you want held at the point of use, add ten to fifteen per cent for growth, then divide by the drawer positions in the configuration you are considering. For example, forty-six active part numbers on a panel assembly bench come to fifty-two or so with slack, which three ACO 18 cabinets cover at fifty-four positions, occupying 1272 mm of bench width. Do this arithmetic on the classified list rather than a rough count, because the DS and DB split changes which configuration actually suits the parts you hold.
