The Roo programme is four things, not one
When a buyer in Mumbai, Pune or Ahmedabad asks us for Roo tilt bins, the mental picture is nearly always the moulded body alone. In the catalogue the programme is layered. First there is the bin body itself, offered as RTB 1 through RTB 4. Second there is the tilt bin cabinet, the pocket that holds the body and provides the pivot it swings on. Third come the frames: the wall-mounted RTBW units, and the single and double sided units built to 425 mm and 640 mm widths. Fourth are the movable carriers — sliding units, rotary stand tilt bins and trolleys. The mechanical idea is simple and it is worth stating plainly, because it drives every layout decision further down this page. The bin does not come out of the frame to be used. It pivots forward inside its cabinet so that the open face rolls up and towards the operator, who scoops from it and lets it swing back. The hand travels a short arc instead of reaching into a fixed mouth or lifting a loaded container off a shelf. That is the whole advantage, and it is also the whole limitation: a tilt bin serves a fixed point of use very well and is a poor choice when the container has to travel. Reading the RTB geometry: why one bin has four dimensions
The published figures for the RTB 1 look confusing until you understand that a tilt bin is a wedge, not a box. The RTB 1 cabinet measures 50 mm (L) x 73 mm (W) x 92 mm (H) on the outside. The bin body inside it is given as 69 mm (L1) and 42 mm (L2) x 62 mm (W) x 80 mm (H1) and 69 mm (H2). The two length figures and the two height figures are the front and rear faces of the same tapered body. That taper is not styling. It is the geometry that lets the body rotate inside a shallow pocket without fouling, and it is why the bin holds more at the mouth than at the base — which is exactly what you want when a hand is going in.
The practical consequence for a purchase manager is that you must use the right number for the right question. Use the cabinet figures when you are working out how far the assembly will project from a wall or a bench back panel, and how much wall length a row will occupy. Use the bin body figures when you are working out whether a component will actually sit in the bin and still leave room for fingers. A 62 mm internal width sounds generous on paper and is genuinely tight once a gloved hand is involved. RTB 1 to RTB 4 form a size ladder within the same programme, and we quote only the RTB 1 numbers here because those are the figures published for it. Before you fix a bill of materials, ask us for the current dimension sheet covering RTB 2, RTB 3 and RTB 4 rather than scaling the RTB 1 numbers by eye. Sizing by arithmetic guesswork is how a plant in Coimbatore ends up with two hundred bins that are one size too small for the terminal lugs they were bought for. Polypropylene copolymer, resin code 05 and what the temperature range really covers
Every Roo body, like the rest of the ALKON bin ranges, is moulded in polypropylene copolymer, carries resin identification code 05, and is rated for a service range of minus 10 degrees C to plus 70 degrees C. The bins carry food-safe and recyclable marks. Copolymer rather than homopolymer matters at the cold end, where it keeps impact resistance instead of turning brittle, and it matters on any shop floor where a loaded bin occasionally takes a knock from a trolley corner or a dropped spanner. The recyclable mark and the resin code together mean that when a bin is finally scrapped, your waste contractor can segregate it correctly instead of sending it to mixed landfill.
The plus 70 degrees C figure is the one that gets misread most often. It comfortably covers ambient conditions anywhere in India, including an uninsulated shed roof in Ahmedabad or Rajkot in May, and the low end covers a cold morning in Nashik or a chilled area. It does not cover proximity heat. Do not mount a tilt bin wall on the back of a preheat oven, inside a paint bake tunnel, directly above a soldering pot, or where hot swarf can land in the mouth of an upward-facing bin. That last one is a real risk on tilt walls specifically, because the tilted mouth presents itself to anything falling from above in a way that a closed drawer does not.
Chemically, polypropylene copolymer shrugs off the fluids most Indian workshops actually use — cutting oil mist, mild detergent, water-based coolant, general machine oil. What it does not enjoy is being left standing in hot aggressive solvent, and it will scuff and haze if somebody attacks it with a wire brush or an abrasive pad. For a bin that has picked up oil, warm water with a mild detergent and a cloth is the correct answer, and it should be done with the bin lifted out of its cabinet so that water does not sit in the pivot. Set that expectation with the housekeeping contractor before the tilt wall is commissioned, not after.
RTBW wall-mounted tilt bin units: substrate first, bins second
The RTBW designation covers the wall-mounted tilt bin unit — a frame carrying a column or block of tilt bin cabinets that fixes directly to a wall, a bench back panel or a machine guard. It is the cheapest way to get small parts to the point of use because it consumes no floor area at all, and it is also the version most often specified badly. The reason is that people specify the bins carefully and the fixings not at all. A loaded tilt bin wall is a live cantilever load: every bin that is pulled forward moves its contents away from the wall and increases the pull-out force on the top row of fasteners.
So decide the substrate before you decide the bin count. Solid brickwork and RCC will take a proper anchor without complaint. AAC block and hollow block will not hold an ordinary plug reliably under repeated tilting load, and neither will plaster. Drywall partitions, common in newer office-adjacent QC rooms in Bengaluru and Hyderabad, need the frame landed on the stud line or on a steel flat that spans studs. Sheet-metal machine guards and enclosure panels flex; back them with an angle or a flat rather than bolting straight through thin sheet. Where we are not confident about the wall, we tell customers to through-bolt the RTBW frame to a mild steel flat and fix the flat to the structure.
Height is the second half of the specification. As a working rule, put the rows the operator uses most within the band between hip and shoulder, keep heavier bins low in that band, and treat anything above shoulder height as slow-moving stock that will be read by label rather than by looking into the mouth. A tilt bin is read from above; the higher the row, the less of the contents an operator of average height can actually see, and the more the label is doing the work. On a tilt bin wall unit mounted above a bench, that means the top two rows should carry either large distinctive items or genuinely infrequent ones.
Single sided and double sided units at 425 mm and 640 mm
The two widths, 425 mm and 640 mm, are the module of the whole Roo programme, and thinking in modules rather than in individual bins makes both the layout and the purchase order far cleaner. The 425 mm unit fits a bench return, a narrow gangway pillar, the end panel of a trolley, or the leftover wall between a window and a door — the awkward strips that most storage never reaches. The 640 mm unit is the workhorse for a full bench back, a rework station or a face of a free-standing island. Once you have decided which module you are working in, the rest of the layout becomes a counting exercise instead of a design exercise.
Single sided units sit against a wall or a bench back and present one working face. Double sided units are free-standing and present two, which is the more interesting option and the more commonly wasted one. A double sided unit only pays for itself when both faces are genuinely worked — kitting on one side and rework on the other, or two operators back to back on the same sub-assembly. If one face ends up facing a wall or a gangway that nobody stands in, you have bought twice the bins and half the access. Before ordering double sided, walk the aisle and confirm that both sides have standing room and light.
A short worked example. Suppose a sub-assembly cell in a Pune plant handles forty small-part SKUs at point of use, of which twelve are fast movers drawn every hour, twenty are drawn a few times a shift, and eight are drawn weekly. Put the twelve fast movers on a 640 mm single sided unit directly behind the bench at hip-to-chest height. Put the twenty mid movers on a second 640 mm unit alongside or on a double sided island if a second operator uses them. Put the eight weekly items on a 425 mm unit at the end of the bench where reaching them costs a step, because a step once a week costs nothing and a step every hour costs a great deal.
Sliding units: more SKUs in the same wall, at a price
Sliding units address the case where the SKU count is high and the usable wall is short. Instead of one plane of tilt bins, panels are arranged so that they slide across one another, giving you more than one layer of bins in a single wall footprint, with one layer presented at a time. For a maintenance store in a Chennai or Kolkata plant with three metres of usable wall behind the workbench and a hundred and fifty consumable lines, this is often the only way to keep everything at point of use rather than making a trek to the main stores several times a shift.
The price is motion and visibility, and it should be paid deliberately. Every item behind a slide costs the operator a two-handed movement before the pick even begins, and — more importantly — it is invisible until that movement is made. Invisible stock is stock that gets over-ordered, because the person doing the visual check does not slide the panel. So the rule we give customers is simple: the front layer is for A items, and nothing that is picked more than a few times a shift ever goes behind a slide. Slow movers, seasonal spares, model-specific parts and second-source alternates are what belong on the rear layers.
Labelling discipline carries far more weight on a sliding installation than on a plain wall. Put a printed index on the face of the front panel listing what is on the layers behind it, and update it the same day a part is added or dropped. Without that index, a sliding unit degrades within a few months into a place where things are put and not found. We have seen this often enough that we now raise it at the quotation stage: if the customer has no owner for the labelling, we suggest a plain RTBW wall unit with fewer SKUs instead, because a smaller system that is trusted beats a larger one that is not.
Rotary stands and trolleys: the tilt wall that comes to the job
Rotary stand tilt bins take the same cabinets and mount them on faces around a vertical column that turns on a base. The operator stays put and brings the required face to hand. For a seated bench task — small assembly, electronics rework, instrument repair, kit building — this is frequently better than any wall, because it puts three or four faces of parts inside the same short reach envelope that a single wall face would occupy. It also lets one stand serve two benches placed either side of it, which is worth remembering when floor area in a Mumbai or Navi Mumbai unit is being counted in square feet.
Trolleys and crash carts do the opposite job: they take the tilt bins to the work. Maintenance rounds, changeover kits, line-side replenishment and breakdown response all benefit from a mobile face of tilt bins, because the technician can see the whole consumable set at once instead of opening drawers. The discipline that makes a tilt trolley work is a fixed home position and a fixed refill owner. A trolley that returns to the same spot at the end of every shift and is topped up there stays useful for years. One that is parked wherever it was last used becomes a mobile scrap bin within a month.
Floor condition decides whether a mobile tilt unit is a pleasure or a nuisance, and Indian shop floors vary enormously. On a good epoxy or well-finished trimix floor, small castors are fine. On an older IPS floor with expansion joints, drain channels, or a lip at a shed door, small castors will stall and — worse — will jolt the top row of bins hard enough to throw contents. Ask for the larger castor option where the floor is uneven, keep the heaviest bins on the lowest rows of a trolley, and never load a mobile tilt unit so that its centre of gravity ends up above the middle of its height.
Mounting heights and reach: laying out a tilt wall for a workbench
Start from the bench, not from the wall. Most Indian industrial benches finish somewhere between 750 mm and 900 mm high, and the operator's hand naturally rests just above that. The first row of tilt bins should begin far enough above the bench top that a hand can enter the tilted mouth without the wrist fouling anything on the bench surface, and no higher. Every millimetre you add there is pushed onto every row above. This is why we ask for a photograph of the actual bench with a tape held vertically against the back panel: the drawing height and the built height of a fabricated bench in an Indian workshop are rarely the same number.
Then think in bands. The band from roughly hip to shoulder is where fast movers live and where you should spend your best bins and your clearest labels. Below hip is acceptable for heavier or bulkier items, since lifting from low is easier than lifting from high, but it costs a bend and should not carry a part picked every few minutes. Above shoulder is storage, not picking. A tilt bin at that height cannot be looked into by most operators, so it must be labelled on the bin face and it must hold something distinctive. Applying these three bands honestly usually reduces the bin count somebody first asked for, which is a good outcome.
Lighting and sight lines finish the job and are almost always forgotten in the quotation. A tilt bin presents an angled mouth, and an angled mouth in a shadow reads as a black hole. If the bench has a task light, check that it does not sit directly behind the operator's head, where it will throw the operator's own shadow into the bins. This is a common complaint we hear after installation, and it has nothing to do with the bins themselves. Specifying a tilt wall for a service or spares counter
A counter is not a bench, and copying a bench layout onto a counter produces problems. The counter has a customer side and a staff side, and the two sides have opposite requirements. On the staff side you want maximum visible density at hip-to-chest height, so that a two-wheeler spares counter in Nashik or Coimbatore, an electrical goods counter in Delhi NCR or a hardware counter in Rajkot can serve a customer without turning away from them. On the customer side you generally want nothing at all within reach. A tilt bin is, by design, extremely easy to help yourself from, which is a virtue at a workbench and a liability across a counter.
This is where the choice between single and double sided matters most. Use single sided units mounted on the back wall of the counter, facing the staff, with the fastest fifteen or twenty lines in the hip-to-chest band and the rest above. Use a double sided unit only in the specific case where you have decided that a customer-facing self-service face is what you want — for example fasteners, washers or fuses sold by the piece in a retail counter — and accept that stock on that face will need counting more often. Do not put a double sided island in the middle of a counter and hope the customer face manages itself.
For a one-person shop, a rotary stand behind the counter often beats a wall. The proprietor stays at the counter, turns the stand, and reaches four faces of parts without stepping away from the customer or the cash point. The same stand can be pushed back against the wall at closing time. This arrangement suits the small trade counters found in Kalbadevi, Peenya, Ambattur, Naroda and similar clusters, where the frontage is narrow, the depth is short, and the person serving cannot afford to leave the counter unattended even for twenty seconds.
Refill routes: keeping a tilt wall stocked without stopping the work
A tilt bin is a pocket in a frame, not a free carrier. That single fact decides the refill strategy. With handled bins on rails or louvre panels you can run a straightforward two-bin system — take the empty away, bring a full one, done. With a Roo installation the natural route is top-up in place: the replenisher tilts the bin forward and pours from a pack, a tote or a larger bin. The bin bodies can of course be lifted out for washing or for a full stock count, but designing a daily routine around lifting them out defeats the point of having chosen tilt in the first place.
So put the reorder signal on the bin rather than in the bin. Mark a minimum fill level inside each body, or fit a card holder on the cabinet face, and have the operator raise the card when the level is reached. This works because a tilted bin shows its own level from above at a glance, which is precisely what a closed drawer cannot do. Nominate one refill round per shift, or one per day for slower cells, and give it to a named person. A tilt wall that is topped up on a fixed round stays quiet; one that is topped up when somebody notices generates stoppages.
Behind the tilt wall you still need a bulk layer, and that is where the handled ranges earn their place. Pivot maintenance and the failure modes worth knowing
Roo installations fail in a small number of predictable ways, and almost all of them are preventable at specification or at commissioning. The pivot itself is a simple mechanical joint and it wants only two things: it should not be forced, and it should not be packed with debris. Most of what goes wrong is caused by something else — overfilling, bad fixings, wrong contents — and shows up at the pivot because that is the only moving part. Once a plant knows the list, a five-minute check on a monthly walk keeps a wall of a hundred bins in service indefinitely.
The recurring problems we get called about are worth writing on the maintenance card, because every one of them starts as a small nuisance that an operator works around silently for weeks before anybody reports it. None of them needs a spare part to correct if it is caught early, and all of them need one if it is not. Read this list to whoever will own the tilt wall on the shop floor, and ask them to raise a note the first time a bin feels stiff rather than the tenth time. Keep a small float of spare bodies, in the order of one in twenty, in the stores. Bins do get taken away, dropped or cracked by a forklift mast, and a wall with three empty pockets loses credibility fast. Cleaning should be scheduled quarterly for oily environments and half-yearly elsewhere: lift the body out, wash it in warm water with mild detergent, wipe the cabinet and the pivot dry, and refit. Combine that with a fixings check on the RTBW frames — a spanner check on the top row of anchors — and the maintenance burden for the whole programme is genuinely close to nil.
- Overfilling past the taper, so the body will not seat back into the tilt bin cabinet and is left permanently half-open.
- A dropped fastener, washer or offcut working its way into the pivot, after which the bin binds and gets forced.
- Oil and fine swarf accumulating in the pivot on machine-shop installations, turning a smooth swing into a scrape.
- An RTBW frame fixed into plaster or hollow block rather than into structure, loosening progressively as bins are worked.
- Bins lifted out for a stock count and never returned to their labelled pocket, which breaks the location discipline.
- Installations on a west-facing shed wall where afternoon sun and radiant heat sit well above general ambient.

To quote a Roo installation properly rather than sell you a box of bodies, we ask for four things: a photograph of the actual bench, wall or counter with a tape measure held against it; the list of part numbers that will live at that point of use, with the physical size of the largest item in each and a rough daily draw; the wall substrate, stated honestly — brick, RCC, AAC block, drywall or sheet metal; and whether the area is ESD-controlled, because electrostatic-safe requirements are met by a separate conductive range and not by adding anything to a standard bin. They can, but not with an ordinary plug. A loaded tilt bin wall applies a pull-out load to the upper fasteners every time a bin is swung forward, so the frame must land on something structural. On drywall that means fixing to the stud line, or to a mild steel flat that spans studs and is itself fixed to structure. What temperature and chemical exposure will the bins take?

Do you supply ESD or conductive versions for electronics assembly?
Electrostatic-safe requirements are handled by a separate ESD and conductive range within the ALKON catalogue rather than by any treatment applied to a standard bin. If your bench is inside an ESD-controlled area, say so at the enquiry stage and we will quote from that range and discuss how the frame and mounting fit into your existing grounding arrangement. Mixing a standard polypropylene bin into a controlled area because it was the size you wanted is not a decision to take casually, and we would rather flag it early.
When is a rotary stand a better choice than a wall unit?
A rotary stand wins when the operator is seated or fixed at one spot and needs more lines than a single reachable wall face can carry. Turning the column brings a fresh face into the same short reach envelope instead of making the operator step sideways, and one stand can serve two benches placed either side of it. A wall unit wins when floor area is precious, when the parts are heavier, or when several people work along the same bench run and each needs their own dedicated face of stock.
How do I refill Roo tilt bins without stopping production?
Refill in place rather than by swapping bins. The replenisher tilts the body forward and pours from a pack, tote or larger bin, so the operator loses no time and the bin never leaves its labelled pocket. Mark a minimum fill level inside each body or fit a card holder on the cabinet face so the operator can signal a top-up, and run one fixed refill round per shift with a named owner.
